The impact of social media on our youth today remains a hot topic with parents, educators, mental health professionals, and lawmakers. Perhaps it is time to ask our younger generation their latest thoughts and feelings about their time and involvement in social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The PEW Research latest survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 and their parents finds that parents are generally more worried than their children about the mental health of teenagers today.  While this is not unusual, both groups are currently are calling out social media\u2019s impact on young people\u2019s well-being, with teens becoming increasingly aware of the negative aspects of their involvement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-01.webp?resize=250%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-580 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-01.webp?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-01.webp?resize=117%2C300&amp;ssl=1 117w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">Approximately half of teens (48%) say these sites have a mostly negative effect on people their age, up from 32% in 2022. But fewer (14%) think they negatively affect them personally.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>DIffering Perspectives: Youth versus Parents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Similar to the last PEW survey in 2022<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>more teens think social media have a negative effect on people their age rather than on them personally.\u00a0<\/strong>About half of teens (48%) say social media platforms have a mostly negative effect on people their age. Meanwhile, 14% see a mostly negative impact for\u00a0<em>themselves,\u00a0<\/em>up slightly from 9% in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-08.webp?resize=420%2C292&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-583\" style=\"width:348px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-08.webp?w=420&amp;ssl=1 420w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tecpsych.com\/techpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PI_2025.04.22_teens-social-media-mental-health_0-08.webp?resize=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The most common teen response falls into the neutral category. About six-in-ten teens (58%) say the effect on them is neither positive nor negative.
